Today, we are facing severe issues globally. The problems vary from environmental issues to societal and human rights issues. Many are suffering from the devastating impacts of these problems, but they are only getting worse and worse. Although there are many severe problems in the world today, I would say that the most serious problems are racism, global warming, and poverty.
Racism is one of the severest problems in today’s world. The whole world is suffering from racism, and many are trying to protest against it. An example is the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement first started due to the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old boy, was fatally shot by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man while visiting his relatives’ town. His unfortunate and unfair death sparked the BLM movement, and it is continuously fighting for black people’s rights. According to Statista, there were 6,880 reported cases of racism in the US in 2020. Another example of racism is Asian hate crimes. Since the pandemic started, there has been a rapid rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. Asians were hit, verbally harassed, shoved, slapped, and spat on, some of them dying as a result of the violence. However, the US is not the only country with racism issues. Many countries in Europe also have problems with racism. According to a research conducted by the FRA, one-third of black people in Europe have said to have experienced racism. The statistics and research clearly show how racism is such a huge problem globally.
Another severe problem occurring today is global warming. As society develops, global warming and pollution are worsening. Global warming is usually caused by fossil fuels, deforestation, transportation, and electricity. Furthermore, it has brought devastating effects to the planet, like a rise in temperature, rise in sea levels, droughts, extinction of certain species, severe storms, and even increased poverty. An example of the impact global warming had on our environment is the Australian wildfires. The wildfire was caused by climate change and led to catastrophic damage. Thousands of homes were destroyed, and billions of animals died. The frequent shifts in temperature will make it harder for one to survive. Furthermore, climate change also leads to many droughts, which harm both people’s health and food production. As these examples show, climate change will have highly destructive impacts on us and our environment.
The final and probably the most important and severe issue is poverty. Poverty can have many harmful impacts on an individual. It can affect their health and living conditions. It may also lead to other issues such as diseases, homelessness, hunger, or even death. But not only does poverty negatively impact individuals, it has a detrimental effect on society, too. Since many of those suffering from poverty cannot afford basic necessities and education, the society will not be well-developed. This will also contribute to the economy; it will require a large amount of money to take care of the poor people. Furthermore, less people will be employed due to the poor conditions they are in. According to a research conducted by researchers at Oxford, 85% of the world population live on less than $30 a day, which means that the majority of the world is suffering from poverty. Poverty causes many other effects including homelessness, lack of food, less access to healthcare, and many more. These problems often lead to even death. Therefore, poverty is an extremely serious issue.
Today, the world is suffering from various problems. Although they are all very severe, racism, global warming, and poverty are the most important as they will impact people in very harmful ways. If these problems don’t stop, it will bring a detrimental effect to our society; in order to prevent the problems from affecting us, we must take action as soon as possible.
