Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome is found in kids in Korea

Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome ("HUS") s a blood disorder usually found in kids younger than 5 years. Symptoms emerge 1 to 10 days after eating contaminated food. Early symptoms include bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Later symptoms are low platelets, low red blood cells, and kidney failure. About 1.5 in 100,000 people get the syndrome every year and less than 5% of them die. HUS is also called ‘Hamburger disease’ because the first people to be diagnosed with HUS got HUS after eating a hamburger with an undercooked patty.

There are many HUS cases and an example of an HUS case is the kindergarten in Korea. Out of 167 people,106 of them had food poisoning and among them, 14 kids are showing symptoms of HUS. The kids got HUS because of the food they were provided in the kindergarten. They gave the kids meat but it was undercooked. Some kids are even getting kidney treatment due to the syndrome getting worse.

This kindergarten didn’t get extra food to prepare for a time for food poisoning. People should be careful of which food they eat, especially in kindergartens or schools with kids who are at a higher risk of HUS. They should always check if the foods are healthy and good to eat, keep everything clean, always cook until it is completely well done.
