After COVID-19 started in Wuhan, China, people have been having stereotypes about Asian people that they have the virus. About 40% of Asian people said that people acted uncomfortable around them. Some people even heard jokes about them, got coughed or spat on, or experienced violence. 58% of Asian Americans believe that racist views toward them have increased since the pandemic, according to the Pew Research Center. Discrimination has been happening and COVID-19 is reason why it happens.
Asian discrimination should be stopped and there are reasons why. Firstly, COVID-19 is not Asian people’s fault. They didn’t make it in the first place. It was the bat who had the virus and it is Chinese culture to eat bats. The bat unfortunately had the virus and that was the cause of it. Second, racism or discrimination isn’t a right thing. It is a wrong thing to do because all people are the same and should be treated equally. For these reasons, people shouldn’t discriminate Asian people.
In the US, there are thousands of incidents of racism against Asians. An example of racism against Asians is an incident that happened in California. A 16 year old boy from San Fernando Valley was attacked by some bullies in his high school and got hospitalized. The bullies accused him of having COVID-19 because he was Asian American."Many may be quick to assume that just because someone is Asian or from China that somehow they are more likely to be carriers of the virus. We need to speak out against this when we see it. We need to speak up, not be bystanders, be upstanders.", Robin Toma, a member of the L.A. County Human Relations Commission said.
