Today, the safety of GMO foods is a controversial subject. A GMO, or genetically modified organism, refers to a plant, animal, or any other organism that has been genetically modified using human technology. GMO foods have been produced around the world for their taste and their environmental advantages. Despite these advantages, however, genetically modified foods can be hazardous in many aspects.
One harmful effect of GMO foods is that they can harm one’s health. The modification of food is done through a very intricate and complex process. If an error is made, it might bring a devastating effect on a person’s health, including allergies, loss of nutrition, or even cancer. This is very similar to medical malpractice. In the medical field, surgeons need to be accurate; even the smallest mistake may cause disease and even death. Furthermore, GMO foods often have dangerous chemicals, too. These will also contribute to the aggravation of one’s health.
Another disadvantage of GMO foods is that they can harm the environment. Genetically modifying crops is not the natural way to cultivate crops. The chemicals in the modified crops can cause an increase in chemical substances in the soil. In addition, GMO foods can transfer genes into other plants, creating more weeds, and leading to many more additional environmental issues.
Our advanced technology has allowed us to alter crops for our enjoyment. However, genetically modified foods are unsafe and full of risk in many aspects. Health and the preserving of our environment and agriculture must be prioritized over the satisfaction of our taste buds.
